Low carbohydrate or ketogenic advice for...
Type 2 diabetes
Many diabetics gain weight through the use of insulin. This is a fat-storing hormone that is made in your own body, but can also be injected as medication. Depending on your type (type 1 or 2 diabetes), your diet and your medication, we can make appropriate advice. In type 2 diabetics we see a lot of weight gain while patients eat less fat. Many suffer from insulin resistance, which means they convert sugars into body fat faster and therefore gain weight. As a result, the body needs more insulin to flush out the amounts of sugar and this often creates a vicious circle. We break this with the low-carbohydrate or ketogenic diet.
High cholesterol
For a long time it was thought that dietary fats always increased cholesterol and eggs would also play a negative role in this. While too much saturated fat can still do this in combination with too many calories in the diet, science shows that a high intake of fast carbohydrates and sugars increases the risk of an elevated cholesterol level. In clients we treat with a low-carbohydrate diet, we see a drop in cholesterol, purely by reducing sugars from the diet. In order to be able to perform this, we have done our own scientific research, which clearly shows the link between dietary intake and cholesterol. Triglycerides (fat particles in the blood) also have a direct link with sugar intake.
Overweight
With weight gain, there is an imbalance in the energy balance. This can be because too much is unintentionally eaten, but also because the foods that are eaten are not effectively used as energy in the body. It depends on your current diet and how your body is structured. We can help you to reduce this by means of the low-carbohydrate diet. A reduction in weight in overweight is almost always accompanied by an improvement in health. Apnea is a good example of this, where the airway is temporarily blocked, which is called Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS). Due to weight loss, there is less pressure and the apnea decreases.
Increased visceral fat
Visceral fat (belly fat) is the fat that surrounds the organs. When this is increased, this causes various disturbances in the body, such as the metabolism and hormone balance. This is because belly fat repels adipocytokines and when they are higher than normal it causes inflammation. Ultimately, this has a relationship with the metabolic syndrome and the hormone balance. With the help of our BIA (bio-impedance scale) we can analyze the visceral fat.
Fat liver disease (NALFD)
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is caused by an unhealthy lifestyle with a high-calorie diet and too little exercise. i.a. Excessive intake of (fast) carbohydrates, especially fructose, causes an increase in fatty liver. Carbohydrate restriction is the solution to spare the liver from overproduction of fats.
Fatty pancreas (NAFPD)
Is often discovered by accident and it is not yet clear what the exact causes are. It is suspected that overweight and metabolic syndrome play a role. Left untreated, it can lead to pancreatitis (inflamed pancreas) or even pancreatic cancer. Weight loss through carbohydrate restriction is effective to reverse this process.

PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome)
Affects 5-15% of women and is a condition in which cysts develop on the ovaries. Insulin resistance plays a role in 75-95%, but disturbances can also be seen at other homormal levels, such as the free testosterone and LF/FSH ratio. Research shows the ketogenic diet has a significant influence on weight reduction, lowering the percentage of free testosterone, LF/FSH ratio and fasting blood sugar.

Lipodedema
A chronic condition that is often confused with overweight, but where there is a local disturbance of the fluid and fat tissue that cause complaints. The cause is still unknown, but hereditary factors and obesity may play a role in its development. Various therapies and specialists such as skin therapists and physiotherapists can reduce the complaints and offer support. Recent research indicates a reduction in complaints by means of the ketogenic diet. Besides the reason that it can cause weight loss, there are indications for a reduction in pain complaints, it has a beneficial hormonal effect, reduces edema and has an anti-inflammatory effect.

Intermittent fasting
This method of fasting is a method in which food is not eaten for a certain (short) period. There are different forms of fasting, the most known methods are the 16:8 and 5:2. Dokters van Morgen made an episode about the effects of fasting. Ultimately, it is important that the form of fasting suits your lifestyle and wishes, with the desired result.

Why support from a dietician during fasting?
When someone goes on a short-term fast based on religion, health or lifestyle, there is normally no need for guidance from a dietician, but when fasting is used to lose weight or is applied for a longer period of time, extra attention is needed for the nutrients. A balanced diet without deficiencies is difficult in, for example, two main meals, at a time where you can eat in a maximum of 6 hours or on days with a maximum of 500 calories per day. That is why we always recommend that you follow this type of fasting under the supervision of a dietitian. The dietitian can also give useful tips & tricks to make it easy! What is the relationship with the ketogenic diet?
By fasting, a shift from the burning of carbohydrates to fats (ketones) occurs when fasting for more than 8 hours. Because the body does not get a supply of food for a long time (fasting), it starts to address the fats and is more economical with its waste products (autophagy). Autophagy is the reuse of broken down parts in the cells which is an important part of fasting recovery and "cleansing the body".With a ketogenic diet the body is continuously in the process of burning fat and we see similar influence of the hormones such as an increase in human growth hormone. By allowing the body to burn ketones, the body switches to burning fat as its primary fuel. This can increase to 70-80% instead of the usual 20-30% in a normal situation.
With the ketogenic diet in combination with fasting the body is already burning primary fat and therefore all positive effects such as satiety, stable insulin level and higher metabolism can immediately start. When fasting without a ketogenic diet, it always takes a few hours before the body switches to burning fat because the body has stored a stock of sugars (glycogen). We therefore use the most 12:12 method with this combination, where no more food is eaten after dinner.
